2022 Graduation
Celebrating the Class of 2022
Posted on 06/06/2022

June 2, 2022 marked the 148th Deering High School graduation, held this year at Merrill Auditorium. Superintendent Xavier Botana welcomed the more than 170 graduates, their families and friends, acknowledging the challenges that this years' graduates had to overcome in order to reach this milestone. Student leaders expanded on the theme of resilience in their speeches.Balqies Mohamed and Emily Cheung prior to the graduation ceremony

From the first moment our students decided to come to Deering, they began to learn. Not just academics, but also what it means to be a Ram. Student speaker Emily Cheung spoke of how, when she toured the high schools as an eighth grader, she noticed that the windows of Deering lit up people’s faces and helped illuminate who they could become. After their time at Deering, these young Rams have become, in the words of student speaker Emily Segal “new people”- young adults who are now more than they were when they first walked through our doors.

We could see it in every student on the stage at Thursday’s Commencement. The Class of 2022, transformed by their education, comprises the "new people" Segal described — people we are proud to send into the world as graduates of Deering High School. We encourage you to watch the whole graduation ceremony and celebrate the uniqueness that gives Deering its strength. Class Valedictorian Balqies Mohamed reminded us that our school is one “that prioritizes [their] students’ safety, that lights up on culture day, that is rooted in collaboration and tolerance.” She called on her peers to use their knowledge, and their "stubbornness and resilience," to begin to bring about justice for all.
