Help PPS Students Make Beautiful Music!

Research shows that making music benefits mental health, helps engage students in school, and builds community. Students need this more than ever. You can help!

The Portland Public Schools offers a range of music education opportunities for students. In addition to music classes, students can participate in band and string ensembles from elementary to high school. For many students, this is a highlight of their school day or the hook that engages them in school.

Band or orchestra participation is sometimes unavailable or limited for economically disadvantaged students because our schools don’t have enough instruments for everyone. When Portland families can’t afford to purchase their own instrument or pay $20 to $48/month to rent one, they rely on loaner instruments from PPS.

But our instrument loaner library is limited and aging. Sometimes the only loaner instrument available is a second or third choice, such as a flute when the child really wants to play the saxophone. We’ve even had years when schools resorted to having lotteries to determine who can participate in band or strings at all.

A donation to the Foundation for Portland Public Schools (FPPS) Music & the Arts Fund allows the music department to purchase more instruments for all interested students. Please click here to donate

The music department is also happy to accept donations of gently used, functioning instruments of all types (except pianos, at this time). If you have an instrument to donate, please email info@foundationforpps.org or call FPPS (207-842-4658) to make arrangements. Thank you!
