Ali, Brydon & Noor Win Board Seats

Portland voters on Nov. 7 elected one incumbent and two newcomers to the Board of Public Education. Current District 5 representative Sarah Brydon was re-elected to that seat. Newcomer Fatuma Noor won the District 4 seat and Usira Ali, also new to elected office, was the winner of an at-large seat.

Only the at-large seat was contested on the ballot.

Ali and Cody Sims were vying for that at-large seat, currently held by Board member Yusuf Yusuf, who didn’t seek re-election. Ali, a medical assistant who is a Portland Public Schools alum and a 2022 Bowdoin College graduate, bested Sims, a parent with a former tech career, to win the seat. Ali received 10,022 votes and Sims got 8,202 votes, according to unofficial results from the Portland City Clerk’s office on Nov. 8.

Noor, a Class of 2019 Deering High School alum and political newcomer, won the District 4 seat currently held by Board member Aura Russell-Bedder, who didn’t run for re-election. Noor was unopposed for that seat.

Brydon also faced no opponent on the ballot in her successful bid for another term.

All Board seats are for three-year terms. The new Board members will be inaugurated on Dec. 5.
