Voice of the Future: Deering Students Lead the Way at the May 4th Gubernatorial Forum

Don’t miss the chance to see seven Deering High School students take center stage for a high-stakes debate that will help shape the future of our state. This event is a powerful continuation of Deering’s legacy as a hub for civic leadership and active student voice. Join us on Monday, May 4th, at Rowe Elementary School for a candidate meet and greet at 5:30 PM, followed by the formal forum from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. To ensure this event is accessible to all families, Portland Public Schools and Parent University will provide child care, interpretation services, and refreshments.

With ten gubernatorial candidates confirmed, this forum is a major event of the 2026 election cycle, focusing specifically on the critical issues facing Maine’s public education. Hilina Gugsa and Noah Rasheed will chair the proceedings, while Charlie Dibble, Vanessa Orellana, Ryan Roarty, Rachehny Rasmey, and Abdulkadir Munye serve as panelists. These students will lead the dialogue, asking the tough questions and providing vital context from Portland’s perspective. We encourage the community to attend and witness this impressive display of engagement as our students help Maine choose its next Governor.
