The Heart of Deering: Medeiros and Kennedy's Impact

In today's educational environment, counselors like Laurie and Shawn are essential. They provide not only academic advising but also social-emotional support, helping students navigate challenges and build resilience.  The district-wide PPS Award was presented to Co-Directors of Counseling Laurie Medeiros and Shawn Kennedy, who are known for their approachable and effective support of students and staff.

Recognizing their work in academic guidance and post-secondary planning, Dr. Ryan Scallon (PPS Superintendent), Barrett Wilkinson (Executive Director of Equity and Belonging), Dr. Ahmed (Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools), and Dr. Giessman (Deering High School Principal) visited the guidance office to deliver the award.

This award highlights that Laurie and Shawn have gone beyond their defined roles, which is particularly significant considering the vital function school counselors serve in a school community. They are instrumental in creating a space where students and staff alike can find support. Beyond assisting with course selection and graduation requirements, they play a critical role in helping students explore their options after Deering, guiding them through the complex world of college applications, career choices, and personal development. Their work brings a sense of belonging and ensures that all students have access to the resources and guidance they need to succeed, making their impact a key component to Deering High School's function.
