Seals, Ships, and Fun: Deering Classes Sail the Casco Bay Mail Run

re the unique gift of Maine’s pristine coastal environment, stunning beauty, and overall school fun, Ms. Heidi Cameron's and Ms. Kathleen Hiscock's Block 1 and Block 2 Deering students embarked on a special tour of Casco Bay via the mail run ferry in early November. This exciting field trip, taken just before the weather turned cold, was designed to introduce students who may be new to the area to the stunning Maine islands, tying directly into their class unit and providing rich content for their newsletter. The students and teachers had a great time together, exploring the islands and enjoying opportunities to see seals, as well as the beautiful sights of Great Diamond, Little Diamond, Long Island, Chebeague, and Cliff Island. A memorable highlight of the cruise was spotting Lighthouse Pocahontas, recognized by the US Coast Guard as the smallest lighthouse, alongside many other coastal wonders.
