Each year, the University of Southern Maine's Walter E. Russell Chair in Philosophy and Education spotlights a Deering High School educator demonstrating a core conviction in the teaching profession, an ability to ignite a passion for discovery in students, deep engagement in the school's ongoing life, and an inventive spirit in their classroom approach. This year's accolade, presented here in Portland, Maine, recognizes Margaret Hoyt. Ms. Hoyt is celebrated for investing extensive hours, adeptly guiding students who require extra support, championing learners by attending events beyond the school day, and serving as a vital energy source for some of Deering's most compelling co-curricular activities.
Ms. Hoyt emerged from a field of five exceptional nominees, each bringing unique strengths to the Deering community. Kathleen Costello was acknowledged for providing a secure, affirming space where students can perceive their own scholarly potential.
Kathryn Hogan earned praise for her drive to continually refine her craft through thoughtful review and collaboration, alongside her generous efforts in guiding student teachers and students alike. Sarah York was noted for cultivating a vibrant classroom atmosphere where a diverse mix of students feel welcomed and experience the thrill of learning, often through tactile, hands-on projects. Lastly, Tyler Jellison was commended for his relentless pursuit of perfecting his curriculum while simultaneously championing social equity within school programs and the wider school environment.
Heartfelt congratulations to Margaret Hoyt and appreciation for all the nominees' profound impact at Deering High.
