On February 11th, Deering High School's Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator, Jane Evans, orchestrated a valuable experiential learning event featuring Hank, a certified therapy dog, and his owner, Amber. This initiative provided a multifaceted experience: for some students, it was a chance to confront and alleviate anxieties surrounding dogs, while for others, it was an opportunity to engage in joyful, tactile interaction with a gentle animal. Hank's calm presence facilitated a safe environment for students to strengthen emotional intelligence, building confidence and fostering empathy. Whether overcoming fears or simply enjoying the therapeutic benefits of animal interaction, students gained firsthand insight into the positive impact of well-trained therapy animals.
