Ms. Lucy Sommo, an ESOL teacher at Deering High School, recently organized a fantastic cultural event that brought the school together. Students from across the globe now living in Portland and attending Deering shared their culinary traditions, preparing a delicious array of dishes representing their diverse backgrounds. From tamales to fufu, the event was a feast for the senses and a true celebration of the rich cultural tapestry at Deering. This immersive experience allowed students to take ownership of their learning, practice language skills in a real-world context, and build community with their peers and teachers.
A huge thanks to Ms. Sommo for her enthusiasm and the obvious joy she brings to her teaching. She consistently goes above and beyond to create engaging learning experiences for her students, and this event was a shining example of her creativity and passion. Ms. Sommo's efforts, alongside the work of the entire ESOL department, help make Deering High School a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
