Mission Report: Deering High School Science Olympiad

On February 7th, the Deering High School Science Olympiad team, under the direction of science teacher and club advisor Mr. Cyle Davenport, conducted a high-stakes field operation at the Harvard University Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our cohort of twenty-four student scientists engaged in a rigorous 23-event circuit, navigating a competitive landscape of 68 elite teams. The intensity of the environment was high, but the team maintained peak operational efficiency throughout the weekend.

Deering successfully disrupted the leaderboard, securing significant accolades against some of the region's most formidable competitors:

  • Remote Sensing: Peter Rank and Ellis Retzer secured 5th Place and a medal, demonstrating elite-level proficiency in interpreting electromagnetic radiation and satellite data.
  • Helicopter: Peter Rank and Ellis Wood earned 8th Place, proving their mastery over aerodynamics and precision flight physics.

This momentum has acted as a catalyst, accelerating our preparations for the upcoming state tournament in April at the University of Maine Orono. As we transition into the next phase of the competitive season, the team is fine-tuning its variables and optimizing its performance. We are ready to return to the field and achieve total dominance at the state level.
