Honors and Heritage: Celebrating Achievement at the 2026 Junior Awards and NHS Convocation

The Deering High School community gathered on Thursday, April 16, 2026, for a memorable evening celebrating the 2026 Convocation of the National Honor Society and the Junior Book Awards. The event was led by Assistant Principal Ms. Carlie Frederick and School Counselor Mr. Ilunga Mutombo, with NHS Co-Advisors Dr. Talya Davis and Carina Spiro overseeing the society's proceedings. It was a night of significant achievement, as 21 juniors received prestigious Book Awards from renowned institutions such as Bowdoin College, Dartmouth, and Yale, representing hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential scholarship opportunities. The program also featured moving speeches on the four pillars of the NHS, Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service, delivered by students Sadaf (Ava) Habibzai, Ivayla Varbanova, Laura Callaghan, and Rocco Ciccomancini. In a beautiful passing of the torch, the school honored 31 members of the Class of 2026 while officially inducting 19 new student leaders from the Class of 2027 into the William E. Wing Chapter of the National Honor Society .
