Future Medical Leaders of Deering: Sheeba & Zahraa Tackle Gender Bias in Medicine

Deering High School seniors Sheeba Shahed and Zahraa Ghanim, Class of 2025, recently hosted an inspiring event featuring Dr. Cate from Greater Portland Health.  They invited Dr. Cate to speak to their fellow students about her experiences as a woman in medicine, including the challenges and triumphs she's faced.

This event was part of Sheeba and Zahraa's capstone project, a graduation requirement where students explore a topic they're passionate about.  Both interested in pursuing medical careers, they decided to investigate the unique obstacles faced by women, particularly women of color, in the medical field.

Thanks to Make It Happen for providing the space for this important discussion! Sheeba and Zahraa did a fantastic job shining a light on this important topic and offering inspiration to the next generation of aspiring medical professionals at Deering High School. We wish all of Deering's future medical focused students the best of luck in their exciting career pursuits!
