From the Stairwell to the Roof: Deering High’s Hands-On Egg Catch Challenge

Mr. Cyle Davenport recently took his AP Physics class on an expedition to the stairwell to apply the laws of physics through a hands-on egg catch experiment. This type of practical application is a major focus at Deering High School, where the science department has remained a strong department, sharing key knowledge of the sciences. The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate the impulse-momentum theorem, challenging students to engineer a box with a cushion of support that would extend the time of impact and reduce the force exerted on a raw chicken egg. By dropping the egg into their devices from various heights in the stairwell, students observed how increasing momentum requires more effective force absorption to prevent the shell from cracking. As the height increased, the physics became significantly more demanding, and ultimately, only a couple of students managed to keep their egg intact all the way from the top of the stairwell, eventually attempting a roof drop.
