On a Monday in late February, the Journalism & Society class took a significant step into the world of professional media with an immersive visit to the Portland Press Herald headquarters. Ms. Kristin Leffler, who recently introduced this high-demand course within our Social Studies department, led her students through an extensive tour of the massive printing press operations. Beyond witnessing the mechanics of daily news, students engaged in direct interviews with veteran reporters to discuss the evolving role of the industry. This firsthand experience provided the perfect spark for their current project: the class is now in the exciting process of launching their very own multimedia newsroom right here at Deering. We are proud to see Ms. Leffler and her students transforming classroom theory into real-world practice as they build this new platform from the ground up.
