Diplomacy in Action: Deering’s Model UN and Debate Leaders Take the Gubernatorial Stage

The halls of Rowe Elementary recently served as the backdrop for a historic display of civic engagement, as Portland Public Schools welcomed ten Maine gubernatorial candidates for a high-stakes forum. In a departure from traditional political events, the evening was directed entirely by the students themselves, proving that the next generation of leaders is already prepared to hold the powerful accountable.

Students at the Forefront

Deering High School’s presence was felt throughout the evening, with several juniors and seniors taking center stage. Hilina Gugsa, a standout senior from the Class of 2026, captured the attention of statewide media. In an insightful interview with News Center Maine, she articulated the weight of the moment, speaking for several minutes on the vital importance of civic responsibility and the role students play in shaping the state’s future.

Joining her in the spotlight were Vanessa Orellano, Racheny Rasmey, Abdulkadir Munye, Ryan Roarty, and Charlie Dibble. These students demonstrated exceptional poise as they addressed the candidates and navigated complex policy discussions. The event also featured Noah Rasheed, a senior who, alongside Hilina, helped lead the proceedings as a forum chair.

A History of Excellence

This level of leadership is a natural extension of the work these students do every day across various campus organizations. Noah Rasheed, a state champion in the Senate at the 2026 Dale Denno Maine State Congressional Debate Championship and co-captain of the Deering Debate team, has long been a voice for progress, even recently leading a successful community blood drive.

Hilina, Ryan, and Charlie are active members of Deering’s renowned Model United Nations program, while Vanessa, Racheny, and Abdulkadir are prominent leaders within our vibrant campus clubs. Together, these co-curricular powerhouses sharpen the very diplomatic and oratorical skills that were on full display during this forum.

Asking the Tough Questions

The candidates faced rigorous questioning on education, housing, and social services. The students did not shy away from the complexities of the issues, ensuring the conversation remained focused on the actual needs of Maine's communities.

This event stands as a landmark moment for Portland Public Schools. These students have shown that they are not just preparing for the future—they are actively participating in the present, demanding a seat at the table and ensuring their voices are heard across the state.
