The Deering High School Debate team continues its reign of rhetorical prowess, delivering another stunning performance at the Maine State Debate Tournament held in January 2025.
Freshman Clementine Enright delivered a compelling Original Work in Speech, taking the top spot in the preliminary round and setting the stage for future triumphs. In a display of sheer debating dominance, Deering's Senior Co-Captains, Violet Blum-Levine and Mya Landy, successfully defended their title as State Champions in Varsity Public Forum Debate for the second consecutive year. Their undefeated streak across all six rounds demonstrates the effectiveness of their strategic approach and persuasive communication. Juniors Margo Bean and Ivy Varbanova further solidified Deering's presence in Varsity PF, securing a commendable third place. Freshmen Paisley Haskell and Anabelle Price demonstrated their knowledgeable depth by earning the title of State Runners-Up in Novice Public Forum Debate.
Deering's Congressional Debate team also made a powerful showing. Junior Noah Rasheed earned the title of State Runner-Up, while Junior Zachary Lee captured third place. Both Rasheed and Lee have officially qualified for the prestigious NCFL Grand National Tournament in Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend! Freshman Ezri Pelletier also contributed to the team's success in Congressional Debate. The team now looks ahead to the Speech and Debate Qualifiers on February 1st at Falmouth High School.
The team extends its deepest gratitude to former coach Mrs. Callaghan, current co-coaches Krista and Bilal, Mr. Daly, and the invaluable volunteer judges whose support is essential to their continued success. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in shaping these debaters into the champions they are today.
