Deering High School's top science students recently achieved a remarkable feat, competing at the invitational Science Olympiad held on the prestigious campus of MIT. This marks the second year Deering has sent a team to this highly competitive event, and these fifteen Deering scientists poured their hearts and minds into preparing. They spent countless hours during lunch, in learning center, and before and after school honing their skills for this large-scale competition.
The team tackled a diverse range of scientific disciplines, including Air Trajectory, Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Bungee Drop, Chemistry Lab, Codebusters, Disease Detectives, Dynamic Planet, Ecology, Electric Vehicle, Entomology, Experimental Design, Forensics, Fossils, Geologic Mapping, Helicopter, Material Science, Microbe Missions, Optics, Robot Tour, Tower, Wind Power, and Write It Do It.
The Deering Science Olympians included: Roderick Ariza, Trieu Chung, Colin Cook, Spencer Fieldroy, Delaney Goodwin, Sophie Li (Officer), Anja Machado, Bilal Mohamed, Benjamin Perry, Peter Rank, Ellis Retzer (Officer), Kelton Streeter, Asa Tussing (Officer), Alma Wallace (Officer), and Ellis Wood.
While the team didn't crack the top four out of the 70+ schools competing, they proudly outranked all other Maine schools present, including the top private school in Southern Maine. The lively competition was punctuated by refreshing "brain breaks" where students could appreciate the scenic river and Boston's striking skyline.
This incredible opportunity wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of Mr. Cyle Davenport and the student officers, who worked tirelessly throughout the semester. The team also extends a huge thank you to the generous community members whose financial support made this trip a reality. It truly takes a community of educators, curious learners, and supporters to make such an experience happen. Deering looks forward to returning to MIT in the future, building on this experience, and achieving even greater success.
