Deering High School Honors Excellence in Teaching with the Russell Award

Dr. Jake Giessman presented the Russell Award, honoring four outstanding nominees for their excellence in teaching. The University of Southern Maine's Walter E. Russell Chair in Philosophy and Education seeks to recognize educators who embody these qualities: a love of learning instilled in students, active involvement in school life, and a commitment to continual growth.

Ms. Karissa Chambers' nomination highlighted her dedication to inclusion and advocacy for all students. Mr. Cyle Davenport's infectious passion for science was praised, with initiatives like the Science Olympiad showcasing his dedication to going above and beyond for his students. Ms. Tracey Menard was recognized for her unwavering belief that anyone can learn.

And this year's well-deserved winner, Ms. Heather Sawyer, was acknowledged for her embodiment of the same commitment to student success. Part of her nomination reads, “...She goes out of her way to make sure her classes are engaging and students are learning in a hands-on way.  She uses creative ways to get students interested in her science classes each semester.  She is flexible and a team player and has done a great job taking over the Forensic science and engineering classes that so many students enjoy. “

Congratulations Heather Sawyer - we are so thankful for all that you do and for inspiring young minds.
