Deering High School Community,

On Monday, July 13, 2026, Joan Sebastian Guerrero was killed by federal agents in Biddeford, ME. Many of us are heartbroken, shaken, and grieving. Our thoughts and hearts are with his family, friends, and community as they navigate this horrendous loss.

We know that this impacts people differently, however, many members of our community will feel fear, uncertainty and a deep sense of vulnerability. We want to ensure you have access to the resources in our community:

• Crisis Resources - resources that offer help to families and educators who are supporting young people during times of crisis.

• District Safety Guidance - there are protocols related to immigration and non-local law enforcement actions.

• Resources for talking to youth: Talking to Children About Violence, Talking to Youth When Scary Things Happen and When Children Are Afraid of a Parent's Deportation

• Maine Immigrant Defense Hub - a wealth of resources for immigrants and neighbors who support them.
