Welcome 8th Graders
Once again, the Deering community is excited to welcome prospective 8th graders to our school.  We will kick off our transition program with an Open House for 8th graders and their families, which will be held on Wednesday, January 11th from 6:00 to 8:00pm (snow date: Tuesday, January 17th).  Our transition program also features three days of visits for Portland Public Schools students.  Lincoln students will visit us on January 30th, Moore students will visit on January 31st, and King students will visit on February 2nd.  Each visit is from 9:30 to 11:30, and will feature a school tour and the opportunity to see a variety of classes.  The foundation of our transition program is led by our sophomore Ambassadors, who receive specialized training in order to assist in orienting the students on their visit days.  For 8th graders who are not currently enrolled in Portland Public Schools, please contact Libby Heselton at 874-8264 to arrange for a visit.  We look forward to showing you all of the amazing things that Deering has to offer!  Here are some highlights from the past school year:

♦ Deering High School is developing partnerships with several organizations such as the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), University of New England’s Center for Global Humanities, the World Affairs Council, and the University of Maine School of Law to ensure that our students have access to a wide range of college and career-related opportunities.

♦ Every year, students have the opportunity to travel to countries such as Spain, China, the Dominican Republic and France as part of CIEE’s Global Navigators program.

♦ Deering hosts the district’s only Student Technology Team.

♦ All 10th graders take Global Issues, a course which is based on Model United Nations curriculum.

♦ Students are able to take advantage of many successful extended learning opportunities such as volunteering at local food banks, job shadows, job application and resume writing workshops, and are able to participate in interviews with local business owners.

♦ Over 50% of the Class of 2016 participated in a Capstone experience.

♦ Deering’s WINN (What I Need Now) program gives students an opportunity to work with faculty members to receive extra support in their coursework or to accelerate their learning in high interest topics.  WINN is a part of the school day and meets for 45 minutes, 4 days a week.

♦ Deering offers 15 Advanced Placement courses.

♦ Students have the opportunity to participate in over 25 athletic teams and over 40 co-curricular activities.

♦ Members of the Class of 2016 were accepted to institutions of higher education such as: Bowdoin College, Clarkson University, Cornell University, George Washington University, Maine Maritime Academy, Mass College of Pharmacy, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Suffolk University, Southern Maine Community College, the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine.
